HEIC and HEVC are new image and video formats widely used by Apple on their iOs and Mac OS devices. Newer versions of Windows may contain support for these files, but not all do out of the box.

To view HEIC and HEVC files on your device, you may need to install extensions from Microsoft, however the Microsoft App Store is not accessible on devices managed by Lavalla Catholic College.

How to install on Windows:

  1. Download both of the files attached to this article.
Note: Chrome may tell you that these files are unsafe, click the Up Arrow, then Keep
  2. Once downloaded, click the HEIF Image Extension.appx file to launch it.

  3. Click Install or Reinstall (whichever option appears for you).

  4. If prompted, click Reinstall

  5. Once installation/reinstallation is completed, click Close

  6. Return to Chrome, and click the HEVC Video Extension.appx file to launch it.

  7. Click Install.

  8. If prompted, click Reinstall.

  9. Once installation is complete, click Close

  10. Restart your computer - if you need assistance with this see How to Restart your Computer.

  11. You can now open any HEIC or HEVC file by double clicking on it.

HEIC and HEVC support exists on Apple Mac OS and iOS devices out of the box.
