Enrolling Apple Mac OS X devices via Microsoft Intune

This guide explains how to enroll your Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) for use at Lavalla Catholic College via the Microsoft Intune Company Portal.

Internet access is required to complete the steps in this guide.

  1. Download the Company Portal installer
    https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=853070

  2. From the Downloads folder, open CompanyPortal-Installer.pkg

  3. Click Continue
  4. Click Continue
  5. Click Agree
  6. Click Install
  7. Enter the Password for your Mac (or use Touch ID) then click Install Software
  8. Click Close
  9. Click Move to Bin
  10. Open Finder
  11. Click Applications on the sidebar, then open the Company Portal application
  12. Click Sign In
  13. Click Begin
  14. Click Continue
  15. Click Download Profile
  16. Click Install
  17. Click Install
  18. Enter the Password for your Mac (or use Touch ID) then click Enrol
  19. Click Done

  20. Enter your Lavalla Email Address (eg smitjoh1@lavalla.vic.edu.au) then click Next
  21. Enter your Lavalla Password then click Sign In
  22. The laptop will now show as enrolled.
  23. Click on each app in the "Apps" tab, then click "Install". Leave your laptop powered on for at least an hour, as the software will download and install itself in the background. When the applications have finished installing, they will appear in the Applications folder in Finder.

  24. The next step is to get emails set up. To do this, go into Finder, and open Microsoft Outlook:
  25. When Outlook opens, it'll ask you to sign in. Use the Lavalla email address and password that you used before. You may be asked to enter it twice -- once to activate Microsoft Office, and once to actually set up the email.
  26. If prompted for an email provider, click "Exchange". Once the set up is complete, you should be ready to start sending and receiving emails. You can check if everything was set up correctly by sending a test email from another email address to the Lavalla address.
  27. The last step is to set up Microsoft OneDrive. To do this, find OneDrive in the Applications, as you did with Outlook
  28. When prompted, enter your Lavalla email address and password and follow the on-screen steps to set up OneDrive. Now when you save files to OneDrive using the folder on your Mac, your files will be safely backed up so if you get another computer, your Lavalla files still still be available to you.

You've now completed the on-boarding process.

Troubleshooting:

The Company Portal install file "can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software"

  1. Open System Preferences then click Security & Privacy
  2. Click Open Anyway

The Username or Password is incorrect

Double check that you've typed everything correctly. "i" (as in ice), "l" (as in "lemon"), ! (an exclamation mark) and the number 1 look similar, same with "o" (as in orange) and the number 0. Also make sure that you've got capital letters where necessary, because "Password" and "password" aren't the same!

Some systems and websites require a username (e.g. smitjoh1) while some require an email address, which is the username (e.g. smitjoh1), with @lavalla.vic.edu.au at the end (e.g. smitjoh1@lavalla.vic.edu.au) so be sure that you're using the correct one when mentioned above!

I don't see some of the apps (e.g. Microsoft Office)

This is normal. Some of the apps (e.g. Office) are marked as required in the Company Portal. This means that they'll be installed automatically, and may not appear in the list of apps.

I'm still having troubles!

If you're still having trouble getting the laptop set up, email helpdesk@lavalla.vic.edu.au and tell us what's going on. Include what sort of device you have (i.e. Mac), what errors you're seeing, what steps you got up to, and so on. Be sure to use a descriptive title as well, such as "Error when installing Company Portal", instead of something like "Help!", as this will help us get to your emails quicker.

Be sure to include an informative title (e.g. "I've restarted but I don't see any apps"), and provide more details in the description, including what type of computer you have, who the student is, and any additional things you've tried to resolve the issue. You'll receive an email when someone replies to your ticket, but please keep in mind that Lavalla IT may be busy at the very start of the year and it may take a moment to get back to you.
